NewsFlash – July

So we have a busy couple of weeks coming up!
If you missed us at Scarisbrick Village Hall, where were you?! I think it was the only sunny Saturday we’ve had this year!
But the good news is you can catch us again on Saturday 14th July at St Mary’s Summer Fair, where we are kicking off the event at 11am.
Before that we’ll be at Henshaw’s again on the 11th… we’re very sad that John won’t be there to hear us, but we’re looking forward to singing for all the other wonderful residents.

Then, most exciting of all, we’re singing at the Civic Hall on Wednesday 18th! Oooooo….. very posh!
We’re doing a fundraising concert organised by the local Stroke Association Group. We’re really looking forward to it! If you’d like to come, contact us or Emma Dacey (from the Stroke Association) on 01772 456138.

Look forward to seeing you there!

A-May-Sing ! Ok so it’s one down, one to go!
No, that’s all wrong… I mean hooray, we’ve had one, and yippee, we’ve another one tomorrow!

Curry Leaf was fab- two hot- off- the- press reports already available here on QLocal, and here on our own website, written by our very own Jan Thomas and Georgia Lloyd! Just the Champion’s report to come now.

Roger from QLocal has asked if people wouldn’t mind registering with the QLocal website- it’s not necessary to see the report, but the more people they have supporting them, the more they’ll be able to do in the community.

Just to remind you all- we’re not rehearsing next week, I’m away.

The week after (23rd)  is Henshaw’s, 105 Norwood Road, Southport PR8 6EL.
If you need directions I have a map- just send me an email.
7pm start as usual, be prompt, jeans and whites (remember it’s warm.)

Then on 30th we’re back at the school.

See you all tomorrow!!

New Year, New Charity!

Posted on 31 March 2012 | Comments Off on New Year, New Charity!

The New Year kicked off in style with a social at The Martin. Mick again did us proud with a fantastic hot and cold buffet, and this time the music was provided by our own wonderful Shaun and Mark. A couple of new members came to check us out and meet the gang; it is a testament to their strength of character that they actually came back the next week to rehearse!
Our first official event of the year was another Krazy Karaoke! Again, this was a social, but with a purpose- we wanted to welcome our new Charity of the Year, and say thank you and handover a large cheque to our outgoing one! We had a wonderful evening, with eclectic performances from Ollie Murs, Elaine Paige and Barbara Dickson, S Club Seven and Grease! Once again we had an incredible spread of food, this time provided by the choir and guests. We were delighted to welcome a group from The Birchwood Centre, the charity that we will be supporting in 2012. We were also delighted to hand over a cheque for £1100 to West Lancs Positive Living that we know they will put to good use helping their clients lead full and active lives. Sadly (or fortunately) both groups had left before they had chance to witness Shaun’s ‘Wuthering Heights’ accompanied by his oldest son clinging desperately to his leg, ignoring his pleas to leave him his dignity (Shaun’s pleas, that is, not Harry’s!) but we ended the evening off in style with a rousing chorus of ‘New York New York’!

Winter Wonders!

Our first event of the Christmas season was Pinfold Christmas Fair on 11th December at Scarisbrick Village Hall, where we sang carols to entertain the local people who had come to show their support for the school and buy a few Christmas presents. An enthusiastic audience joined in with the carols, and the choir’s efforts were rewarded when their raffle-phobic conductor won an enormous hamper of beautiful Christmas food and treats!
Earlier in the year at the AGM of the West Lancs Council for Volunteer Services, Sarah and Sarah met Emma from the Stroke Association, who was also presenting information about her organisation. She made contact after the event, and as a result, a small group of the choir found themselves at Burscough Wharf on a cold damp December 13th morning, singing carols for the group who meet there, many of whom had had strokes in the past. The therapeutic benefit of music and singing for people that have suffered strokes is widely documented, but more importantly we had a wonderful time joining together raising our voices. Practising carols from October onwards can leave the choir slightly immune to them by the time December comes, but the choir all agreed that the warm welcome we received, and the shared experience had really left us all feeling very Christmass-y! It was also wonderful to make contact with a group meeting on our doorstep, and I feel sure that we will be working with them again the very near future.
Finally the main event arrived- Celebrate at St Elizabeth’s on 15th December. You can read a review of the event, and the subsequent concert at Henshaw’s here. And so ended the busiest year yet for ReSound Community Choir!

Aye Sailor!

On 11th November the choir were invited to take part in a gig organised by the members of West Lancs Positive Living to raise money for them and for a local branch of Mencap. One of the parents from WLPL was part of the featured act of the evening with his two- part sea shanty group, ‘LocTup Together’ who took us through a selection of classic and more tongue-in-cheek songs. The Mencap choir, lead by the incredibly talented Gaynor performed a few numbers, showing commitment and enthusiasm with the songs they sang. Finally ReSound took to the stage to perform the ABBA section of their September set. We couldn’t resist inviting a few of the Mencap choir and the guys from WLPL to join us for one of the songs we knew they had performed before, then they stayed for the rest of our set, making for a wonderful impromptu combined choir! It was an evening of great fun and musical celebration, and I know a good amount of money was raised for both charities.

A September of Singing!

Well it’s take me a while to get around to this, but what a September we had!
The 17th was Sunshine! at St Anne’s Parish Centre in Ormskirk. You can read a full review of the event here, including the later Henshaw’s performance!
On 21st we held our second AGM, this time at the local Martin Inn. Mick the proprietor put on a fantastic spread for us, a sit down three course meal and coffee. Sarah gave the Annual Report, with thanks given to outgoing and incoming trustees, fortunately whom were the same people! Jan delivered the fairly healthy financial report, and the evening quickly descended into karaoke mayhem, thanks to the generosity of Mark Jordan bringing all his gear! Shaun’s rendition of Wuthering Heights brought many to tears, but mostly of laughter (and shock!) The choir agreed that this was now a new favourite venue, and added it to our list of places to ‘have to come here again’!
The 25th September saw a first- the Bandstand Marathon, a nationwide event held simultaneously at hundreds of different bandstands. A mix up over dates when the rangers were away meant we had no chairs for people to sit on, but we still had a reasonable number of people brave the chilly September air to hear a (slightly hung-over) choir perform songs from our recent gig and from past sets. It was a real pleasure to be out and about in the community, and a lot of fun to sing at a bandstand, so we immediately pledged a repeat performance in 2012. You can read more information about that future event here. The nationwide organisers subsequently decided to make ReSound a featured performer- you can read that interview here!
To round off an already packed September, on 30th a group of choir members set off on the first ever Weekend Away, to Tyn-y-Nant near Pwllheli in North Wales. You can read all about it here!

Bandstand Marathon

Tomorrow is Sunshine! and I am very excited about it.
If you haven’t already got tickets, why not??? A fantastic evening of music, food, dancing and an incredible raffle- what more could you want?!
But, I want to take this opportunity to tell you about another incredible event that your local cuddly community choir are involved in taking place just a week after Sunshine! Bandstand Marathon is a nationwide event encouraging people to use their local bandstands. On Sunday 25th September between two and four in the afternoon there will be over a hundred concerts across the UK from Scotland to Cornwall, and ReSound are delighted to announce that we will be performing in Coronation Park, Ormskirk! It’s really exciting to be part of something so big, and we’re really looking forward to entertaining the (hopefully) masses of people who WILL be enjoying the beautiful late September sunshine… if you don’t believe me, think back to the snow I ordered at Christmas (and nobody mention A-May-Sing o_O!)
So dig out your deckchairs and head on down to Coronation Park for an afternoon of funky sounds and a sing- a- long!!
